The Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP) — developed by OpenAI with Stripe — is the spec by which an AI assistant would complete a purchase on a merchant’s behalf. Today ChatGPT uses it for product discovery only: OpenAI retired in-chat Instant Checkout in March 2026 and shoppers buy on the merchant’s own site. Shopify syndicates its merchants’ catalogs to ChatGPT automatically. This page explains the checkout spec as it stands, for stores that want to be ready if it reopens.
How the ACP checkout spec works (not currently live in ChatGPT)
The assistant calls the merchant’s checkout API: a session is created with line items and address, totals and shipping are computed, the buyer confirms, and a delegated payment token from a supported PSP (Stripe, Adyen or Braintree) is charged on the merchant’s side. The order lands in the store’s own system and status flows back by webhook. The card number never touches the merchant.
What a non-Shopify store would need
(1) a spec-compliant product feed with is_eligible_checkout=true; (2) live privacy and terms URLs; (3) an ACP checkout endpoint — sessions, totals, tax and shipping, idempotency, refunds, webhooks; (4) delegated payments via a supported PSP; (5) an approved merchant application. Items 3–4 are real engineering.
